Leicester
City Council's Learning Disability
Service
Leicester City’s
Learning Disability Service strives to ensure it is meeting
the needs of Leicester’s diverse communities and cultures –
approximately 40% of people using services are from an
ethnic minority background.
The Chief Executive’s Office has recently appointed Irene
Kszyk to the new post of ‘Corporate Head of Equalities’ for
the City Council and Sukhi Biring is the Service Equality
Officer for Adults and Older People. Irene’s team are very
keen to work with and support the Learning Disability
Service. Some action points from the Learning Disability
Plan have been included in the City Council’s ‘Disability
Equality Scheme’ Action Plan.
Sukhi was part of the team, from Leicester, that took part
in the second Valuing People Leadership Programme on
Ethnicity. The management team has enjoyed and welcomed
Sukhi’s active involvement in various aspects of the
Learning Disability Service, including ‘Quality Assurances
Cases Panels’ within which equality and ethnicity are major
strands. The service is currently refreshing it’s Quality
Assurance Framework and Service Plan and the Service Plan
and Partnership Board will undergo an Equality Impact
Assessment later this year. Sukhi will support and inform
all the processes.
